A Little Background
Liposomes were discovered in the early 1960’s and subsequently studied as cell membrane models. They have since gained recognition in the field of drug delivery and more recently as cosmeceutical delivery systems. Liposomes vary in charge and in size depending on their manufacturing protocol and ultimate purpose.
- Liposomes are tiny spheres of liquid made up of one or more phospholipid bilayers. What makes liposomes unique and effective carriers is that they can safely transport ingredients through the skin or gastrointestinal tract into target areas of the body.
- Phospholipids contain a hydrophilic head that attracts water, and a hydrophobic tail that repels it. When they come into contact with water, the tails turn inward and the heads turn outward, which forms a bilayer. The result is a tiny liposome bubble that safely encapsulates ingredients and protects them against degradation.
- Unlike other drug delivery methods, liposomes transport ingredients to specific tissues. The ingredients inside these tiny spheres are fully protected as they reach the target areas in the body. The bioavailability of nutrients delivered via liposomes is therefore particularly high. Liposomes are made of essential phospholipids, the same material that makes up your cells. The phosphate head of phospholipids is hydrophilic; it loves water. The fatty-acid tails (lipids) are hydrophobic; they hate water.
When phospholipids are in a water-based solution, the hydrophobic tails distance themselves from the liquid just like oil separates from vinegar. As the tails turn inward and the heads turn toward the liquid, they form a double-layered membrane, which is nearly identical to the double-layer structure of the membranes that surround each of your cells.
